Have Faith
Martin Luther King Jr. said,
“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
This is a lot like having children.
During our first pregnancy, we run out and buy all of the little pink and blue baby booties, only to learn newborns don’t need shoes--because not only do they not know how to stand, but even if they could, they won’t even stay on their tiny baby feet! Now, we feel a little silly, but they were just so darn adorable and it felt like a rite of passage. Purchasing something so small that symbolized an adventure so enormous. So we pack up the baby booties and pass them on to another member of our village, because they too will want to discover for themselves that these little shoes are completely precious, but completely unnecessary.
Now I know Martin Luther King Jr. was not talking about glorified hand-crocheted socks, he was speaking about making process towards ending racial injustice. Even he didn’t know the lasting impact his words would have on our society today, but he took the step.
We don’t know the full impact of what we are about to do until we are brave enough to go forward. And what we are doing for ourselves requires bravery—we need to do this, so we can do for others. We must have faith that what we are doing here, will be the tiny ripple that can eventually turn into a wave.
